How Signage Helps Your Business Succeed
Signs are an important investment for every business. Whether you’re selling car parts, milkshakes, or vintage clothing, your sign will let customers know where you’re located and give them a general idea of what to expect when they walk in.
Of course, there are lots of different types of signs that you can choose from to best represent your business, and it’s helpful to be familiar with them to make an informed decision.
Channel Letters
You most likely see hundreds of channel letters a day without realizing it! Think about your local drugstore or dollar store. The individual, three-dimensional letters displaying the store’s name, mounted to the building, are called channel letters.
They’re usually internally illuminated, which helps people spot your business at any time of day or night. Channel letters are pretty simple in design, which lets you communicate a message as clearly as possible, and they look polished and put-together. They’re a classic for a reason!
Monument Signs
Monument signs are stand-alone signs outside of a building, usually placed somewhere near the entrance, to help people find their way. These are often used for universities and hospitals because their design lets people know that this is a serious, established, high-quality organization.
They’re often made from materials like brick, stone, and cement, which means that they last a long time and are very durable.
They can be lit internally, lit by spotlight, or even lit by placing lighting elements behind custom letters, creating a halo effect around them.
Pylon Signs
When you’re driving on the highway, you’re likely to spot pylon signs along the way. These are signs located high off the ground, supported by pylons (hence the name!). They let people locate your business from a great distance, and they’re usually internally illuminated.
If you’re located on a quiet street without a lot of long-distance visibility, you most likely don’t need a pylon sign. But if you’re located near a busy road or somewhere that people can see from far away, a pylon sign might just be your best bet!
Building Signs
Like channel letters, building signs are mounted directly to the surface of the building itself. The possibilities for a building sign are virtually limitless. You might choose a sign “cabinet”, which is essentially a box with your company’s information on it, lit from the inside.
You could also choose individual letters.
These are distinct from channel letters, because while they are dimensional, they don’t necessarily need to hold electrical wiring inside of them, so they’re generally smaller.
These could be mounted directly to the face of the building, or mounted with standoffs with lighting elements behind them to create some dimension. They could also be externally lit with a spotlight or awning light.
How can signage help my business?
While perhaps you shouldn’t sometimes, people do tend to read a book by its cover. That means that within a glance, they’ll take note of your business and form an opinion of it. If your sign is in bad shape or isn’t designed to be clearly legible, it’ll leave a bad impression on potential customers.
Similarly, if your sign is sparkling clean and perfectly lit, people will be naturally attracted to it. In some ways, signs function as 24/7 advertising for your business, helping to create brand awareness in your area.
